Irving Sternberg

December 24, 1928 — June 13, 2022

Irving Morris Sternberg, age 93, died on Monday, June 13th, 2022 in Lone Tree, Colorado of natural causes.

Born in Newark, New Jersey on Dec. 24, 1928, Irv lived in various NJ cities until moving to Colorado in 1969 with his wife and children.

As a young man, Irv joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951, serving in the Korean War. His devotion to the military remained intact throughout his life, reflected in his writing and social interests.

Following his tour in the Marines, Irv acquired a Bachelors in English from Rutgers University, then began his career as a journalist with the Newark News. He later took a position with then-called Eastern Electric, transferring to Western Electric in Colorado and eventually finishing out his long career in the phone company as an executive with AT&T.

Irv’s passion, however, was writing, which he developed in his 35 years of retirement, publishing 13 books, forming and facilitating multiple writer’s groups and inspiring an untold number of budding writers. Irv also developed his natural artistic ability, becoming an accomplished oil painter.

His other hobbies and interests included many sports but his favorite was baseball—he helped bring major league baseball to Denver—and was an avid Rockies fan. Over his lifetime he enjoyed skiing, fishing, traveling and spending time with his friends and loved ones.

Survivors include son A. Jeffrey Sternberg, daughter Jean A. Dhority, four grandchildren and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Ann Sternberg.
